Other team based sports allow for demonstration of leadership, side businesses or running extra-curricular societies. 

Managers enable the delivery of services by making sure clinicians have what they need to care for patients.

When I was (rota co-ordinator, auditing… or completing quality improvement work) I worked closely with managers.
